Last month, I embarked on a new adventure. It involves strength, flexibility, rhythm and a healthy dose of stamina/energy. What is this new challenge you ask? It's Zumba!
Per the Zumba site, Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away featuring interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.
All that said, Zumba is a lot of fun! Who knew exercise could be so exciting? Not me, that's for sure! I always thought exercising was painful, boring and really hard. Something that I would have to force myself to do for the sake of trying to be healthy and lose weight. It was a losing battle.
I have been blessed to have Zumba offered at my gym at work. At 4:30 every Tuesday and Wednesday, my co-workers and I head down to our yoga studio with comfy workout gear and lots of water, ready to dance the next hour away. The first few classes were quite awkward with a bit of embarrassment thrown in. You want to me shake what? In front of who? But I have to work with these people?!?!? But honestly, our instructor Michelle is such a ball of energy and fun that we don't care anymore (or at least are starting to care less) about what we look like. We just do the best we can and Michelle leads the party. At the end, we're sweaty and tired, but leave with huge smiles on our faces.
For a sneak peak of what Zumba classes look like, take a look at this video (this is a random video I picked - not my lovely instructor, but you get the idea all the same). The first song/routine that is in this video is actually one of the routines we do. It's a lot of fun! Trust me, everyone is paying attention to the instructor and trying to keep up. Nobody is looking at or judging you! I feel rather silly on most days, but I'm having too much fun to really care....hehehe...and yes, there are men in my class too!
For you locals out there, to see a schedule of of Michelle's Zumba classes available in Calgary & Cochrane, please go to: http://www.fitforchange.ca/

ReplyDeleteI like the Zumba, belly dancing ones. A thing I liked about them, is that people of of shapes, ages, and sizes were doing it, and were actually smiling and having fun.
